The California Boating Safety Officers
Association was established in 1973 by a small group of officers that
saw an need to improve the training and interaction between all of
California's Boating Safety Officers. The task is no small feat.
Over one hundred and fifty local, state or federal agencies provide
some level of boating safety and enforcement in California.
As of March 31, 2008, our roster includes 431
officers from over one hundred agencies and organizations. We serve our
members by providing:
- Three training seminars per year. A three-day
seminar in the Spring of each year and two one-day seminars, the
Southern Regional and the Northern Regional, in the Fall.
- A newsletter, THE BEACON, which contains information
about the association, an update of statewide training programs, and
general news of interest to our membership. It is published five
times per year.
- Our Membership Roster is issued annually then updated
in the newsletter.
- Monitoring and lobbying for or against legislation
that deals with boating safety issues.
Our past accomplishments include being the lead
in the legislation that revamped California's Boating Under the
Influence laws to more closely align with the Vehicle Code, creating
the first Boating Accident Investigation Writing Template in the
country, and sponsoring the legislation that made ski flag use
mandatory in California.
We are now in our thirty-fifth year. We
look forward to serving our membership even more as we move through
2008.
